Physician Leadership Coaching

You were promoted because you are excellent at medicine, and now spend your days on budgets, schedules, and people who report to you. Leadership coaching builds the part nobody taught you, at a pace that fits alongside clinical work. The aim is for you to lead in a way that still looks like you, rather than an imitation of whoever led you first.

What Does Physician Leadership Coaching Actually Develop?

Medicine promotes its best clinicians into roles that require an entirely different skill set, then provides almost no preparation for it. Leadership coaching closes that gap by working on the things a division chief or medical director is judged on: how you run a meeting, how you handle a colleague who is underperforming, how you hold a position with administration, and how people feel after speaking with you. The measurable effect on a team is larger than most physicians expect.

I provide this coaching through Physician Coaching with Anne, LLC, and the register here is deliberately different from my other work. Nothing has gone wrong. You are not being corrected, and nobody referred you. This is developmental coaching for physicians who want to be effective in a role they were given with little guidance. I use a behavioral framework to help you understand your own leadership instincts and adapt them to people who operate differently. Sessions are confidential, which matters more in leadership than physicians anticipate, since a chief has almost nobody internally with whom they can think out loud about their own team.

Our Services

Coaching Services I Offer

Leadership work often draws on neighboring areas as the role develops. These are the services available, whether leadership is the focus or one part of a broader engagement.

Communication Coaching
for Physicians

Leadership exposes communication habits that clinical work never tested, particularly in meetings and written updates that reach a wide audience. This service works on delivery, listening, and how your manner reads to people who now watch you closely. Many leaders take it up alongside the leadership work.

Professional Behavior
Coaching for Physicians

A separate service for physicians facing concerns about conduct or workplace relationships, usually raised by an institution. It is corrective rather than developmental, and handled without the labels these situations tend to attract. Leaders sometimes arrange this service for members of their own division.

Conflict Management and
Difficult Conversations

Leadership brings other people disputes to your door, plus a few of your own with administration. This service covers preparing for hard conversations, staying measured under pressure, and taking criticism without shutting down. New leaders often find this the most immediately applicable skill they lack.

Physician Leadership
Coaching

The subject of this page. Sessions cover presence, decision making, running a team, and holding your ground with executives, using situations from your current role. It suits new chiefs, medical directors, committee chairs, and physicians preparing to step up. Nothing has to be going wrong for this to be worth your time.

DiSC Assessment for
Physicians

DiSC is especially useful for leaders, because a division contains several behavioral styles and each one responds to a different kind of direction. As a Certified Facilitator, I use it to explain why your approach works on some of your people and not others. It also shows you how your own style shifts when the pressure comes from above.

The 12-Session Physician
Coaching Program

Twelve sessions is the standard format, structured around self-awareness, accountability, skill development, practical application, and reflection. Leadership questions rarely resolve in one meeting, so the length allows decisions to be made, tested, and reviewed. An extension to twenty-four sessions is available for longer transitions.

Coaching for Healthcare
Organizations

Organizations arrange leadership coaching for physicians they are developing, as well as coaching for physicians facing behavior concerns. This service explains how sponsored engagements are structured, what the organization receives, and where confidentiality holds. The terms are put in writing before the first session.

Benefits of Physician Leadership Coaching

Your Decisions Get Easier to Explain: Working through your reasoning with a coach beforehand means you arrive at meetings able to defend a position rather than announce one.

Your Division Feels the Difference: Mayo Clinic data tie supervisor leadership behavior directly to burnout and satisfaction among the physicians they lead, which makes your development a retention strategy as much as a personal one.

You Stop Managing Everyone the Same Way: A behavioral framework shows you why the approach that motivates one partner produces silence in another, and what to do differently with each.

Somewhere to Think Without Political Cost: Leaders carry personnel problems they cannot discuss with peers, partners, or their own chief, and coaching provides the only room where that material can be laid out fully.

The Role Stops Consuming Your Clinical Identity: Coaching helps you define what you will and will not take on, so administrative work stops quietly expanding into the part of the job you actually trained for.

Work Process

How Leadership Coaching Works: 3 Simple Steps

Define the Role You Are Actually In

Call (503) 819-8642 or email amhirsch@comcast.net. The first conversation maps your responsibilities, your constraints, and the leadership questions currently taking up the most of your attention.

Understand How You Lead by Instinct

Early sessions, often using DiSC, establish your default approach and where it serves you well, so development builds on strengths instead of replacing them.

Apply It to Live Decisions

Each session takes a real situation from your division, works through the approach, and reviews the outcome once you have tried it.

First-Time Physician Leadership Coaching

Taking on a first formal leadership role brings new responsibilities, competing priorities, and a different relationship with colleagues. My sessions help you decide what belongs on your plate, what should be delegated, which meetings deserve your time, and which standards need to be established early.

I also work through the shift from peer to leader, especially when giving direction feels uncomfortable. Sessions provide practical ways to make decisions, address problems, and use your authority without becoming overly rigid. My focus is helping you develop a leadership style that feels confident and authentic.

Physician Influence and Communication Coaching

Leading fellow physicians often depends on influence rather than formal authority. I work with you on building credibility, communicating ideas clearly, gaining cooperation from skeptical colleagues, and addressing situations where an agreement in a meeting does not lead to action.

My sessions also cover the challenges of leading former peers or physicians who do not report directly to you. DiSC-based coaching can help you recognize different communication patterns and adjust your approach while maintaining clear expectations and professional boundaries.

Physician Leadership Coaching for Burnout and Staffing

Staffing shortages and heavy workloads can place physician leaders under constant pressure. I help you look at how those demands affect your leadership, where your own capacity needs attention, and how workload concerns are being handled across the team.

In my sessions, we can work through difficult staffing conversations without false reassurance or added frustration. I also help you distinguish between pressures you can absorb at the leadership level and issues that need to be communicated openly to your division.

Physician Executive and Administrative Leadership Coaching

Physician leaders often need to communicate the same concern differently with clinical colleagues and executive leadership. My sessions help you frame clinical needs around operational, financial, quality, and risk considerations while keeping patient care central to the discussion.

I also prepare physicians for proposals that face resistance, competing priorities, and decisions they may not personally support. The work focuses on using your credibility carefully, communicating disagreement professionally, and presenting final decisions to your department with clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physician Leadership Coaching

No. Plenty of influence in medicine sits with physicians who hold no title at all, including senior partners, committee members, and clinicians others instinctively follow. Coaching suits anyone whose effectiveness now depends on other people rather than on their own clinical output. Physicians also use it before applying for a role, to work out whether they want it.

Have You Been Given a Leadership Role Without Much Preparation?

Most physician leaders learn the role by getting things wrong in public, which is an expensive way to develop. A confidential first conversation will tell you quickly whether coaching would shorten that process. There is no obligation and no assessment involved.
