Physician Coaching in Seattle, WA
Seattle concentrates an unusual amount of academic medicine, regional referral work, and subspecialty practice into a small number of campuses. That means tighter teams, longer working relationships, and less room to let a strained one drift. Coaching gives you a confidential setting to address how you communicate and conduct yourself, without it becoming known around the hill.

Physician Coaching for Seattle and the Puget Sound Region
I deliver coaching virtually to physicians across Seattle and the surrounding region, which is worth stating plainly because it shapes how the service works. There is no clinic to visit. Physicians meet by video from wherever suits them, which matters in a city where the medical community is closely connected. The practice supports clinicians on First Hill at Swedish and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, at Harborview a few blocks away, at UW Medical Center in Montlake, at Seattle Children’s in Laurelhurst, at UW Medical Center Northwest up in Northgate, and at Swedish Cherry Hill and Ballard.
Physicians at the Seattle VA on Beacon Hill, at Overlake in Bellevue, at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland, and in independent practices across the Eastside work the same way. Being on Pacific time means sessions fit into a normal working day rather than the edges of one.
Our Services
Coaching Services Available to Seattle Physicians
Communication Coaching
for Physicians
Academic medicine layers teaching, research, and clinical duty into the same conversation, and residents read an attending’s tone very differently than a peer does. Sessions work on how your delivery lands across that hierarchy. You bring recent exchanges and practice alternatives aloud.
Professional Behavior
Coaching for Physicians
Large Seattle systems have well developed reporting routes, so conduct concerns tend to arrive documented rather than as hearsay. This service works through what the reports describe, the conditions behind them, and what changes. It runs without labeling the physician.
Conflict Management and
Difficult Conversations
Regional referral work means Seattle physicians negotiate constantly with clinicians they will never meet, often about scarce beds. This service covers preparing for those calls, holding a position without escalation, and receiving criticism from a distance. It also covers standing disputes closer to home.
Physician Leadership
Coaching
Section heads and service chiefs here frequently lead people who outrank them academically, which makes formal authority almost useless. This service develops presence, influence, and credibility with both faculty and executives. It suits physicians being developed rather than corrected.
DiSC Assessment for
Physicians
Seattle clinicians often split time across two or three sites with different cultures and expectations. DiSC gives you a consistent way to read those rooms and adjust without changing who you are. Results are debriefed in session rather than emailed to you.
The 12-Session Physician
Coaching Program
The structure that holds the work, covering self-awareness, accountability, skill development, practical application, and reflection. Academic physicians typically pace sessions around service weeks and protected time. Twenty-four sessions are available where more time is needed.
Coaching for Healthcare
Organizations
Medical staff offices, chairs, and chief medical officers across Puget Sound arrange referred engagements. What the organization receives is agreed in writing beforehand and limited to participation. Session content stays between the physician and me.
What Makes Communication Harder in Seattle Medicine?
Seattle is dominated by a small number of very large institutions, and that changes the dynamics. UW Medicine trains and employs physicians across a five-state WWAMI region, so a difficult working relationship in Seattle can follow a clinician through a network that reaches Alaska, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Harborview is the only designated Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and verified burn center in Washington, and it serves as the regional referral center for Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, which puts consultants under constant pressure from outside callers as well as their own teams. Washington law adds another layer.
Since the passage of E2SSB 5236 in 2023, hospitals operate formal staffing committees with state oversight of compliance, which has given nursing staff a structured route to raise concerns that physicians previously heard informally or not at all. None of this is a reason to communicate differently in principle. It is a reason that the cost of communicating poorly has gone up.
What Does the Data Say About Physician Support in Washington State?
Washington has an unusually mature infrastructure for physician support, which tells you something about both demand and stigma. The Washington Physicians Health Program has operated since 1986 as an independent non-profit contracted by the Department of Health, and it works confidentially without involvement from the Washington Medical Commission. WPHP reports that in 90 percent of cases, participant identities, circumstances, and participation remain confidential with no disclosure to the state regulator.
That confidentiality exists because physicians will not seek help otherwise. Washington also places a legal duty on license holders to report a colleague who may be unable to practice safely due to a mental or physical condition, under WAC 246-16-200 through 246-16-270, which means Seattle physicians are acutely aware of what does and does not get escalated. Coaching addresses a different category entirely. It deals with communication and behavior rather than health conditions, and it carries no reporting obligation of any kind.
How Do Coaching Needs Differ Across Seattle Practice Settings?
Physicians in this region work in several distinct environments, and the pressures are not the same in each. The table below shows where communication tends to strain in each setting and what the coaching usually focuses on as a result.
| Practice setting | Seattle examples | Where communication strains | Common coaching focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Academic medical center | UW Medical Center Montlake, UW Medical Center Northwest | Teaching and supervision, feedback to trainees, faculty hierarchy | Tone across ranks, giving correction that is usable |
| Regional trauma and referral net | Harborview Medical Center | High acuity handoffs, outside referral calls, capacity disputes | Communication under pressure, staying level when refusing |
| Large community health system | Swedish First Hill, Cherry Hill and Ballard, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health | Throughput expectations, multisite teams, patient experience scores | Listening, patient rapport, responding to complaint data |
| Pediatric and subspecialty | Seattle Children's, specialty institutes | Small tight teams, family conversations, long relationships | Serious news conversations, repairing a specific relationship |
| Independent and Eastside practice | Overlake, EvergreenHealth, private groups | Partner disagreements, governance, no formal HR buffer | Conflict management, difficult partner conversations |
Frequently Asked Questions About Physician Coaching in Seattle
No, and the two address different things. WPHP handles health conditions that may affect practice performance, including substance use and mental health, and operates under its own statutory confidentiality. Coaching addresses communication, conduct, and workplace relationships. A physician can use either, or both, and nothing from coaching is referred to WPHP or to the Medical Commission.
Yes. UW Medicine faculty and affiliates practice across the WWAMI region, and virtual delivery makes location irrelevant to the work. Physicians in Spokane, Boise, Anchorage, or Missoula can be coached on the same terms as someone on Montlake. Time zone differences are minor within that footprint.
Yes, within agreed limits. A referring chair or medical staff office receives confirmation that the physician enrolled, is attending, and is engaging with the work. They do not receive session content, assessment results, or anything the physician said about colleagues. Those terms are documented before the first session so nobody is surprised later.
It often does. Washington hospitals have formal staffing committees and escalation routes, which means friction that used to stay on the unit now arrives in writing. Coaching works on how you respond when staff raise something, how your reaction is read, and what a more effective version of that exchange looks like.
No. Sessions are held by video and typically last an hour, so they fit into an administrative block or a gap between clinics without explanation. Nothing is mailed to your institution and no record appears in any system. Physicians in small subspecialty groups at Seattle Children’s and elsewhere use the program routinely for exactly that reason.
Facing a Communication or Conduct Concern at a Seattle Hospital?
An introductory conversation is confidential and carries no obligation. Describe what has happened, and you will get a straight assessment of whether coaching fits, what it would involve, and how confidentiality would work in your particular situation.
